Delta-v (Δv): what it means
Delta-v (Δv) means change in velocity. In astronautics it is the total speed change a spacecraft can make with its propellant, and the number that decides whether it reaches orbit. It is set by the Tsiolkovsky rocket equation: Δv = vₑ · ln(m₀ / m_f). deltaV, the software team at deltav.build, is named after it.

Definition
Δv is the change in an object's velocity. Δ (delta) means change; v is velocity. It is measured in metres or kilometres per second.
In spaceflight, Δv is a budget. Every manoeuvre costs some: launch, orbit change, landing, return. A vehicle's Δv, set by its engines and propellant, fixes which of those it can afford. Too little and it falls back to Earth.

The rocket equation
The Tsiolkovsky rocket equation gives a vehicle's Δv:
Δv = vₑ · ln(m₀ / m_f)

More Δv comes from a faster exhaust or a higher share of propellant. The logarithm makes the second expensive, which is why rockets use stages.
