What AI estimating tools do
Most "AI estimating" tools are AI takeoff. They read drawings and return quantities:
- Detect. Walls, rooms, doors, windows and fixtures on the plan set.
- Measure. Lengths, areas and counts per sheet.
- Search. Find every instance of a symbol or note.
- Export. Quantities out to Excel, PDF or estimating software.
Togal's own features page says it: "Simply export your quantities out of Togal and into your own estimation software or excel spreadsheet" (Togal features, September 2026). The count is automated. The price is not.

Where the estimate still happens by hand

- Map. Takeoff quantities land on your line items and cost codes automatically.
- Price. Each line pulls your current unit cost and crew rate, with the source shown.
- Compare. Flag lines that differ from similar past jobs.
- Level. Read sub quotes and line them up for scope gaps.
- Learn. Record the outcome of every bid against its numbers.
The estimator still sets the markup and signs off. The workflow removes the retyping and puts history on screen.

Direct answers
Do AI takeoff tools price the job?
Mostly not. Togal, for one, tells users to export quantities into their own estimating software or Excel (Togal features page, September 2026). Pricing stays with you.
Should we drop our estimating software?
No. If it prices well, keep it. A custom workflow feeds it cleaner quantities and pulls in your cost history, so estimators stop retyping.
What data does a custom workflow need?
Past bids with their outcomes, your cost database or rate sheets, and the takeoff exports. Messy spreadsheets are fine; cleaning them is part of the build.
